Print-on-demand is allowed on Etsy when you create the design yourself, work with a production partner to print it, and disclose that partner on your listings. What Etsy does not allow is reselling items you did not make or design, such as generic products bought from a wholesaler or a POD catalog design someone else created. Most POD shops that get shut down fail on intellectual property or disclosure, not on the POD model itself.
This guide covers Etsy’s Creativity Standards, the production partner rules, the trademark risk, and the fees to price around in 2026.
What are Etsy’s Creativity Standards?
Etsy groups allowed items into four categories. Every listing should fit at least one.
| Category | What fits | Where POD lands |
|---|---|---|
| Made by a seller | Items you make by hand or with your own tools, such as a 3D printer or laser cutter | Only if you print in-house |
| Designed by a seller | Your original designs sold as digital files or produced by a production partner | Most POD shops |
| Handpicked by a seller | Vintage (20+ years), one-of-a-kind finds, curated gift sets | No |
| Sourced by a seller | Craft supplies, party supplies and items personalized for a buyer through a production partner | Some personalized items |
Etsy’s standards also allow AI-assisted designs created from your own prompts, as long as you disclose the AI use. Bundles, collections or scans of someone else’s work are prohibited.
What does Etsy ban for POD sellers?
- Reselling commercially available items that do not fit any of the four categories, such as blank merchandise or generic products from a wholesale catalog.
- Using someone else’s designs, including stock designs from a POD provider’s library, purchased design bundles you do not have rights to resell, and scans of other artists’ work.
- Hiding the production partner or misstating where the item ships from.
- Infringing intellectual property: brand names, logos, characters, sports teams, song lyrics and celebrity likenesses you do not have a license for.
How does production partner disclosure work?
Etsy requires sellers to disclose when an item is made by a production partner and to give accurate shipping origin information. In practice that means:
- Add each POD provider (or the print facility it uses) as a production partner in Shop Manager.
- Attach that partner to every listing it produces.
- Set the “ships from” location and processing times to match where the partner actually ships.
- Keep the partner information current if you switch providers or print locations.
The disclosure appears on your listing, so buyers can see that you designed the item and a partner produced it. Etsy treats this as transparency, not a penalty.
How do you keep a POD shop on the right side of the rules?
- Create original artwork or license it with written commercial rights that allow use on products for sale.
- Search the USPTO trademark database before using a phrase as the main design element. Short slogans are often registered for apparel.
- Keep design files and licenses organized so you can answer an IP complaint with proof.
- Disclose AI use where your designs are AI-assisted.
- Avoid mass-uploading near-duplicate listings. Many thin variations of one design add listing fees and rarely add sales.
If you want a POD shop built on original designs and proper disclosures instead of risky trend copying, we can map out a plan with you.

Etsy’s main fees for US sellers as of October 2026:
| Fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Listing fee | $0.20 per listing (renews every four months or when the item sells) |
| Transaction fee | 6.5% of the item price plus shipping and gift wrap charged |
| Payment processing (US) | 3% + $0.25 per order |
| Offsite Ads (only on sales they drive) | 15% if your shop had under $10,000 in sales in the past 365 days; 12% once you reach $10,000 |
Shops that reach $10,000 in sales over 12 months cannot opt out of Offsite Ads, but they get the lower 12% rate. Smaller shops can opt out. Some non-US sellers also pay a regulatory operating fee.
A worked POD example
Here is a hypothetical t-shirt order. The base cost will depend on your provider, blank and print method.
| Line item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Shirt price + shipping charged | $28.00 + $5.00 = $33.00 |
| Listing fee | −$0.20 |
| Transaction fee (6.5% of $33) | −$2.15 |
| Processing (3% of $33 + $0.25) | −$1.24 |
| POD base cost + shipping | −$18.25 |
| Profit without Offsite Ads | $11.16 |
| Offsite Ads fee if that sale came from an ad (15% of $33) | −$4.95 |
| Profit on an Offsite Ads sale | $6.21 |
Etsy Ads (on-site promoted listings) and discounts come out of that remaining profit too. Run your own numbers with our Etsy fee calculator before setting prices, and price so an Offsite Ads sale still makes money.
How do you choose a POD niche and price it?
The POD shops that last usually pick a buyer first and a product second. “Funny shirts” is not a niche. “Gifts for ER nurses” or “shirts for disc golf players” is, because you know who is buying, what they care about and what occasions they shop for.
- Pick a group with an identity. Professions, hobbies, places and life events give you endless original design ideas without borrowing anyone’s brand.
- Check demand in Etsy search. Look at how many listings exist and whether the top results are original designs or generic filler.
- Check trademarks on any phrase you plan to use as the main design.
- Choose products that fit the buyer: mugs and shirts for gifts, stickers for low-cost add-ons, hoodies for higher-priced orders.
- Price from fees up, not from competitors down. Start with base cost and shipping, add Etsy’s fees and an Offsite Ads allowance, then add the profit you need.
Many POD sellers set prices so that even an Offsite Ads sale keeps a few dollars of profit, then treat non-ad sales as the upside. Listing photos matter more than most sellers expect: clean mockups that show the design clearly, plus a size chart and real color notes, cut returns and messages.
Is Etsy POD still worth it?
Plan for the time it takes. New Etsy shops often wait weeks for their first sales while listings collect views and favorites, and on-site Etsy Ads can speed that up but add cost per sale. Keep a simple sheet of views, favorites, conversion rate and profit per listing, and rework or remove listings that get views but never sell. A smaller catalog of listings that convert usually earns more, and costs less in renewal fees, than a large catalog that sits.
It works best for sellers with a clear design niche: a hobby, profession, location or occasion where buyers want something that feels personal. Original designs, good mockups, accurate shipping times and a few hundred focused listings tend to beat thousands of generic ones. The shops that struggle copy trends, ignore trademarks and race to the bottom on price.

The bottom line
Etsy allows print-on-demand when the design is yours and the production partner is disclosed. It does not allow reselling items you did not make or design, and it acts quickly on IP complaints. Build original designs, disclose partners, check trademarks, and price with the 6.5% transaction fee, 3% + $0.25 processing and possible 15% Offsite Ads fee in mind.
