TikTok Shop lets US sellers list products inside the TikTok app and sell through short videos, live streams, a shop tab and affiliate creators who earn a commission on each sale. To sell, you need to be a US resident aged 18 or older with US ID, a US bank account and tax details, and you pay a referral fee on each order. That fee is the main thing that changed in 2026, and creator commissions plus ads often cost more than the fee itself.
This guide covers how the platform works, who can sell, what it costs as of October 2026, how affiliates and ads fit in, and the violations that get new shops restricted.
How does TikTok Shop work?
Products you list in TikTok Shop Seller Center can show up in four places:
- Shoppable videos from your own account or creators, with a product link under the video.
- LIVE shopping streams where products are pinned during the broadcast.
- The Shop tab and product search inside TikTok.
- Your profile’s shop showcase.
Buyers check out without leaving the app. You ship the order yourself, through a 3PL, or through Fulfilled by TikTok (FBT), and TikTok pays out after delivery on a schedule that depends on your account. Discovery is driven mostly by content, not search, which is the biggest difference from Amazon.
Who can sell on TikTok Shop in the US?
You can register as an individual or as a business. The core requirements:
| Requirement | Individual seller | Business seller |
|---|---|---|
| Age and residence | 18+, US resident | US-registered business |
| ID | US government-issued ID | ID for the primary representative |
| Tax details | SSN or ITIN (last four digits), W-9 | EIN, matching tax form, representative’s SSN/ITIN digits |
| Bank account | Personal account in your legal name | Business account in the registered name |
| Other | Proof of address | Beneficial owner details for owners with 25%+ equity |
Some categories, such as supplements, beauty and certain electronics, need extra approval or documents before you can list. Applications are often reviewed within a few business days.
What are TikTok Shop fees in 2026?
TikTok Shop charges a referral fee on each order, calculated on the customer payment plus any platform discounts, excluding tax. Here is where things stand:
- Referral fee: TikTok’s public category table lists 6% for most categories, with some at 5% or special rates. Several trade reports in August and September 2026 say TikTok raised the standard US rate for most non-food categories to 8% effective August 4, 2026. Your actual rate shows in Seller Center and on settlement statements; use that, not a blog post, for your math.
- Refund administration fee: When an order is refunded, TikTok returns the referral fee on the refunded amount but keeps 20% of that referral fee, capped at $5 per SKU.
- Shipping: Depends on carrier, weight and size if you use TikTok’s shipping labels.
- FBT: Fees by units, weight, storage time and services.
- New seller offers: TikTok has run reduced introductory rates for new sellers that make a first sale quickly. Terms change, so check the offer shown during onboarding.
How do affiliate creators get paid?
Affiliates are TikTok creators who promote your product in their videos or lives and earn a commission you set. You can offer an open plan (any eligible creator can promote) or targeted plans with higher rates for chosen creators. Trade data puts typical US commissions between 10% and 25%, with averages reported in the low teens.
Commission is paid on the sale after refunds, so a creator does not earn on returned orders. Many sellers also send free samples, which is a real cost: if you ship 100 samples at $8 each and five creators post, that is $800 in product and shipping for five videos.
Put it together and a TikTok Shop sale can easily carry an 8% referral fee, a 15% affiliate commission and ad spend on top. That is why TikTok products usually need a higher gross margin than an Amazon product at the same price.

TikTok Shop Ads promote your products and creator videos across the For You feed, search and LIVE. Since July 2025, TikTok has made GMV Max the default and only campaign type you can create for Shop Ads; you can no longer create or edit the older Product Shopping Ads, Video Shopping Ads or LIVE Shopping Ads.
GMV Max is an automated campaign. You set a budget and a target return on ad spend, and TikTok chooses placements and which videos to push, including eligible affiliate content. That makes your creative library the main lever: more good videos from your account and from creators give the system more to work with. Weak videos plus a high budget usually just spends money faster.
What gets TikTok Shop accounts restricted?
New shops are watched closely. TikTok uses a violation point system tied to your account health, and enough points lead to listing removal, feature limits or account deactivation. Common causes:
- Late dispatch or late delivery beyond the handling time you set.
- High cancellation or return rates, often from stockouts or misleading listings.
- Prohibited or restricted products, including listing gated categories without approval.
- Misleading claims, especially health, weight-loss and before-and-after claims in videos or listings.
- Intellectual property complaints for using brand names, logos or designs you do not own.
- Off-platform transactions, such as directing buyers to pay outside TikTok.
- Review manipulation, including incentivized or fake reviews.
How should you launch a new TikTok Shop?
New shops do best with a short, organized launch rather than turning everything on at once:
- Start with a small catalog. Three to ten products with clear photos, accurate titles and honest descriptions are easier to manage than fifty.
- Set handling times you can hit. Late dispatch is one of the fastest ways to collect violation points in the first weeks.
- Post your own videos first. A handful of product demos from the shop account gives creators examples and gives GMV Max something to run with later.
- Open an affiliate plan, then invite creators whose audience matches the buyer, not just the biggest follower counts.
- Send samples selectively. Check a creator’s recent posts and sales history before shipping free product.
- Add GMV Max once videos convert. Ads scale content that already works; they rarely fix content that does not.
Review settlement statements weekly in the first months. That is where you see the real referral rate, refund administration fees, affiliate payouts and shipping costs, and it is the only reliable way to know what each order actually earns.
Is TikTok Shop worth adding to an Amazon or Shopify business?
TikTok Shop fits products that are visual, easy to demo in 15 to 30 seconds, priced for impulse buying and able to carry creator commissions. It is a weaker fit for products people research for weeks or buy by searching a part number. Many brands use it alongside Amazon: TikTok creates demand, and some of that demand converts on Amazon later.
Plan for the operational load. TikTok rewards frequent posting, creator outreach and fast shipping, which is more daily work than a mature Amazon listing. Our TikTok Shop automation service covers shop setup, product listings, affiliate recruitment and GMV Max management. The bottom line
TikTok Shop can move product fast, but it is not cheap per order once you add the referral fee, creator commissions, samples and ads. Confirm your real referral rate in Seller Center, price with room for a 10% to 20% affiliate commission, keep shipping times tight, and treat compliance as a daily task. Do that and TikTok can be a strong second channel.
